New Delhi, Nov 9 (NationPress) Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai delivered the powerful message of 'Justice for All' as he inaugurated and led a 4-km walkathon organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Sunday.
'All democratic institutions – including the executive, legislature, and judiciary – are established for the benefit of the citizens; hence, our guiding principle should be justice for everyone,' CJI Gavai conveyed to reporters while participating in the walkathon dressed in sports attire, amid rigorous security.
The event comprised 4 km and 8 km runs along with a 4 km walk, where CJI Gavai joined other Supreme Court judges, such as Justices Sanjay Karol, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, and numerous lawyers, as confirmed by an SCBA representative.
On the prior day, CJI Gavai referred to legal aid as a vital component of nation-building. 'Providing legal aid is synonymous with building the nation,' he emphasized at the National Conference focused on Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms.
The Chief Justice stated that the legal aid initiative aims to fulfill Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's vision of transforming lives.
'The goal of the legal aid movement is to amplify the voices of the unheard and restore their dignity,' he remarked, reiterating Dr. Ambedkar's assertion that our struggle is not for wealth or freedom but for life transformation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mirrored this sentiment, stating, 'Through the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System (LADCS) launched by the Government of India, approximately 8 lakh criminal cases have been resolved in just three years. These government efforts have facilitated access to justice for the underprivileged, Dalits, and marginalized communities in the nation.'
The LADCS is an extensive scheme that offers free and quality legal representation to qualified individuals in criminal cases from the pre-arrest phase to trial and appeals.
Designed to guarantee justice access for the underprivileged, it assigns dedicated defence attorneys at district headquarters to manage all legal aid aspects in criminal cases, functioning as a clinic-like setup for those in need.
