Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 9 (NationPress) - The Sreekaryam Police have initiated action against Dr C.N. Vijayakumari, the Head of the Sanskrit Department and Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Kerala University’s Kariavattom campus, for purportedly making casteist remarks towards a research scholar.
As per police reports, the case arose following a complaint lodged by Vipin Vijayan, a research scholar from Vanchiyoor, who claimed that the professor publicly humiliated him by mentioning his caste.
The FIR, filed on November 8, reveals that the incident took place after his PhD open defense on October 15, when Vijayakumari allegedly declined to sign his thesis report. Vipin sought her signature again to finalize his doctoral submission, during which she is said to have made derogatory remarks regarding his caste in front of other faculty and students.
Furthermore, the complaint alleges that such comments are not isolated; Vipin asserted that since 2015, when he began the MPhil program under her guidance, the professor has frequently made disparaging remarks about his caste.
The FIR cites Vijayakumari as having allegedly stated that “individuals from lower castes cannot learn Sanskrit” and that she “would clean her room with water after they entered.”
Authorities indicated that the professor has been charged under Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which address the intentional insult or abuse of a member of the SC/ST community using caste names in public.
Officials confirmed that the charges are non-bailable, and a comprehensive investigation will be undertaken before any arrest decisions are made.
In response to the controversy, Vijayakumari denied making any casteist comments, asserting that her refusal to sign the thesis stemmed solely from academic concerns, claiming that Vipin’s research had factual inaccuracies and instances of plagiarism.
She maintained that she was adhering to academic standards and accused the scholar of fabricating accusations to damage her reputation. The investigation is presently ongoing.
