New Delhi, Nov 9 (NationPress) The Congress party has taken a step back from the remarks made by its MP Shashi Tharoor, who compared BJP veteran L.K. Advani with former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, referring to Advani as a "true statesman".
In a statement, Congress Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera remarked: "As always, Dr. Shashi Tharoor articulates his own views, and the Indian National Congress firmly distances itself from his latest remarks."
Khera continued, "His continued role as a Congress MP and CWC member exemplifies the core democratic and liberal values that are distinct to the INC," despite some party members on social media calling for disciplinary measures against the former diplomat-turned-politician.
Tharoor also faced criticism from various Congress leaders for referencing the "China setback" in relation to Nehru and the "Emergency" in the context of Indira Gandhi. Both issues are frequently used by the BJP to challenge the Congress.
Earlier, Tharoor took to X to wish Advani a happy 98th birthday, praising his "unwavering commitment to public service, modesty & decency", and highlighting his influence on the "trajectory of modern India". He described Advani as a "true statesman whose life of service has been exemplary."
Attaching an old photograph with Advani, who was Deputy PM from 2002-2004, Tharoor later responded to criticism regarding Advani’s Rath Yatra before the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 by stating: "Reducing his extensive service to one significant event is also unjust. Nehruji's career shouldn't be solely defined by the China setback, nor should Indira Gandhi's by the Emergency. We owe the same respect to Advaniji."
This isn't the first incident where Tharoor’s comments have sparked controversy within the Congress. Previously, he had expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Tharoor’s openness to participate in the global diplomatic mission initiated by PM Modi following Operation Sindoor has also raised eyebrows among his party colleagues, as the Congress has claimed it did not endorse him for this mission.
In the past, the Congress has made various attempts to mitigate the fallout from Tharoor’s statements.
