The Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) marched to the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi on Friday, 4 September, demanding the registration of a first information report (FIR) under stringent provisions and the immediate arrest of a man who, in a widely circulated video, openly claimed to have grievously assaulted the father of a student protester at Jantar Mantar. The man further boasted in the video that Delhi Police released him owing to his 'political connections' — an allegation that CJP leaders described as a 'shameful day' for the country and for democracy.

What the Viral Video Shows

The video in question, which spread rapidly across social media, purportedly shows the accused admitting that he struck Sanjay, the father of a minor girl named Nishu, on the head using a metal bracelet during a sit-in protest. CJP co-convener Saurav Das told reporters on the way to the police station: 'Nishu, who is a minor, had participated in our protest at Jantar Mantar from the beginning itself. Her father, Sanjay ji, also used to accompany her. During our peaceful sit-in protest, some members of a criminal gang entered and undertook violence. They broke Sanjay ji's head using a metal bracelet.'

In the same video, the accused allegedly threatened Nishu directly, saying, 'We will see her too' — a remark CJP leaders flagged as an active threat to a minor.

CJP's Allegations Against Delhi Police

Das alleged that when an initial FIR was registered, the CJP pressed police to invoke charges of attempt to murder and relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, arguing there was a caste dimension to the attack since the family belongs to a Dalit community. 'But the police didn't do anything like that. When we pressurised the police, they told us to get an order from the court. Since then, there hasn't been much progress in this case,' Das claimed.

He further alleged: 'Police have themselves said that 2,800 hardened criminals were present during the protest. Then why no action was taken against them?' Das said that all evidence — including videos mocking Nishu and threatening her father — had been submitted to police, but that the accused continued to move freely.

What the CJP Is Demanding

The delegation, which included Nishu and her father Sanjay, sought a meeting with senior police officials at Parliament Street Police Station. CJP leaders demanded the identification and arrest of those involved under stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Das said the group would 'see what to do next' after gauging the police response.

CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka told reporters: 'Now, the condition in the country's capital has become such that goons are openly admitting that they broke open Sanjay ji's head. It was a complete attempt to kill him. He himself is admitting that an attempt to murder case should be made against him, but the Delhi Police, under the protection of a politician, did not take any action against that person.'

Political Connections Claim and Broader Implications

The accused allegedly stated in the viral podcast interview that he escaped custody following a call from a politician — a claim that, if verified, would raise serious questions about political interference in law enforcement. Ranka called the situation 'a shameful day for the country and democracy where goons are openly claiming that they have attempted to kill someone and still no action is being taken against them because they are politically connected.'

This comes amid broader concerns over the safety of peaceful protesters and the accountability of law enforcement in the capital. The CJP has indicated it will escalate the matter legally if police fail to act on the delegation's demands.
