Clash Erupts in Chandigarh: Police Officer Hurt Amid Demonstration for Sikh Prisoners' Release

Chandigarh, Jan 8 (NationPress) A Inspector of Chandigarh Police was injured on Tuesday during a conflict with members of the Quami Insaaf Morcha after police deployed teargas shells and initiated a cane-charge to deter them from proceeding toward the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The Quami Insaaf Morcha has been advocating for the release of Sikh prisoners currently incarcerated.
The Station House Officer, Jaiveer Rana, suffered injuries during the skirmish in Sector-43, according to police reports.
The demonstrators were demanding the liberation of Sikh prisoners, referred to as 'Bandi Singhs', and had entered Chandigarh from Mohali where they gathered on Tuesday morning to commemorate the second anniversary of the Quami Insaaf Morcha.
To prevent any escalation, the Chandigarh Police had deployed extra personnel at the city's entry points from Mohali, Punjab.
Although numerous protesters successfully entered Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.
All significant entry and exit points from Mohali to Chandigarh were reinforced with barricades, causing delays for residents and commuters on various roads.
A confrontation occurred near the ISBT in Sector-43 between the police and CRPF personnel and the protesters.
Several Chandigarh police officers were assaulted by protesters, resulting in injuries.
The police also took some protesters into custody.
Since February 2023, members of the Quami Insaaf Morcha have been demonstrating at the entry point to Chandigarh, demanding justice for the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and the release of Bandi Sikhs who fought for the Sikh community and have completed their prison sentences.
Earlier in February 2023, a clash occurred between protesters and the Chandigarh police, resulting in the filing of cases against the Morcha activists.
The Sriomani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) also initiated a signature campaign aimed at securing the release of Sikh prisoners.
