Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, April 5 (NationPress) - In a coordinated effort, the Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence Wing, alongside Chandigarh Police and supported by Haryana Police, has apprehended the two principal suspects responsible for throwing a hand grenade outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chandigarh, confirmed Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav on Sunday.
The suspects have been named as Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh, both hailing from Rattangarh in Ropar. Their arrest took place in Rewari, Haryana. Notably, Amanpreet Singh has a history of criminal activities, with first information reports (FIRs) for theft and snatching filed against him in Mohali and Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh.
This arrest follows the capture of five additional suspects involved in the incident, identified as Balwinder Lal, Jasvir Singh, Charanjit Singh, Rubal Chauhan, and Mandeep, who were taken into custody a day earlier. Authorities recovered a hand grenade and a .30 bore Zigana pistol from their possession.
DGP Yadav informed the press that with the inclusion of these two latest arrests, all seven individuals implicated in the incident are now under police custody. He highlighted that the assailants were allegedly guided by foreign-based handlers affiliated with the ISI, namely Baljot Singh, known as Jot in Portugal, and Harjeet Singh Laadi in Germany, who reportedly incentivized them with a payment of Rs 2 lakh for executing the attack.
Under the influence of their foreign handlers, the suspects organized the logistics for the assault, utilizing various cutouts and sub-modules to carry it out, according to Yadav. During initial interrogations, Gurtej Singh revealed that he had connected with a handler from abroad around six months ago through social media.
Following the handler’s directives, Gurtej, together with associates Rubal Chauhan and Mandeep, procured the arms and grenades from Jasvir in Bharapur village in SBS Nagar on March 28. Subsequently, Gurtej enlisted Amanpreet Singh to assist in executing the attack.
On April 1, after scouting the area, Amanpreet Singh threw the grenade, while Gurtej Singh filmed the incident on his mobile phone as instructed by the handler. Both suspects fled the scene immediately afterward.
