Chandigarh, April 4 (NationPress) - The Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence Wing, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Police, has successfully cracked the case of the grenade assault on the BJP office. This breakthrough led to the apprehension of five individuals allegedly involved in the attack. Authorities also seized one hand grenade and a .30 bore Zigana pistol, along with ammunition, from their possession, as confirmed by State Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Saturday.
The individuals arrested have been identified as Balwinder Lal, known as Shami, Jasvir Singh, also called Jassi, Charanjit Singh, referred to as Channi, Rubal Chauhan, and Mandeep, known as Abhijot Sharma.
DGP Yadav revealed that initial investigations indicate this module had connections with Pakistan's ISI and was directed by handlers operating from abroad, specifically in Portugal and Germany.
The accused were part of an organized network that utilized various intermediaries and sub-groups to facilitate the attack, as stated by the DGP.
Furthermore, two primary attackers have been identified as part of the ongoing investigation to establish both forward and backward connections in the case.
Details suggest that a grenade explosion occurred outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Sector-37, Chandigarh, on Wednesday.
Elaborating on the findings, Assistant Inspector General (State Special Operations Cell), Deepak Pareek, noted that the investigation uncovered a transport chain that moved hand grenades, firearms, and cartridges.
This consignment was passed through several operatives before reaching the final attackers, as he explained.
The AIG mentioned that under the guidance of a handler located in Portugal, the accused orchestrated the delivery and execution of the assault.
Police teams are actively conducting raids to capture additional fugitives involved in the incident.
A first information report (FIR) dated April 3 has been filed under Section 25(1)(B) of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in Mohali.
