A 17-year-old Class 10 student, identified as Prosenjit Biswas, was allegedly hacked to death on Monday in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, with the murder reportedly stemming from a dispute over a local football match. Baruipur Police have arrested three youths in connection with the killing, officials confirmed on Tuesday, 7 July.

How the Attack Unfolded

Prosenjit, a resident of the Fultala area in Baruipur, had reportedly been involved in a heated argument with a group of local youths a few days earlier over a football game played at a field in Fultala. According to his family, local residents alleged the accused had been planning retaliation ever since that altercation.

On Monday, the three accused allegedly summoned Prosenjit and one of his friends to the Palpara area. An argument reportedly broke out between the two groups, following which the accused allegedly attacked both teenagers with sharp weapons. Eyewitnesses said Prosenjit sustained a severe chest injury during the assault. His friend, who attempted to intervene, was also attacked and sustained serious injuries.

Death at Baruipur Hospital

Realising the gravity of the situation, the accused allegedly rushed both injured teenagers to Baruipur Sub-District Hospital. Doctors declared that Prosenjit had succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His friend remains hospitalised and is undergoing treatment.

News of the teenager's death triggered immediate outrage. Family members, relatives, and local residents gathered at the hospital premises in large numbers. Tension escalated further when the accused reportedly sought shelter inside the police aid post at the hospital, prompting an angry crowd to demand they be handed over. Police intervened and moved the accused to a secure location to prevent any untoward incident.

Baruipur Police District Sub-Divisional Police Officer Abhishek Ranjan confirmed the arrests, stating the attack appeared to have originated from the earlier dispute over a football match. All three accused are in custody and are being questioned, he said. The victim's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway. Additional police personnel have been deployed across the area to maintain law and order.
