A sports university rising in the foothills of Nainital just got a direct push from the top. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday, 7 August 2026, chaired a detailed construction progress presentation on the Uttarakhand Khel University at Gola Par, Nainital — and left officials with unambiguous orders: finish on time, and do not cut corners on quality.

What the review covered at CM House

The Sports Department presented the current status of every major component under construction at the university campus. On the table: sports infrastructure, academic buildings, training facilities, hostels, a sports science centre, and research facilities. Cabinet Minister Rekha Arya and Special Principal Secretary Amit Sinha, along with senior Sports Department officials, were present for the briefing at the Chief Minister's residence.

Dhami's directive was direct. All construction must be completed within the stipulated deadline. Quality is non-negotiable. The CM told officials that this project is 'not merely an academic institution, but an important institution that will give a new direction to Uttarakhand's sporting future' — and that every structure must be built to high standards with long-term utility in mind.

World-class ambition, block by block

The CM spelled out what 'world-class' means in practice. He directed that the university prioritise modern training facilities, sports grounds meeting international standards, indoor and outdoor sports complexes, sports science and medicine facilities, high-performance training centres, and advanced arrangements for sports management and sports research.

Crucially, he instructed officials to align the university's development with the state's new Sports Policy, Sports Vision, and Legacy Plan — so that the institution can offer world-level opportunities to athletes, coaches, sports scientists, and researchers. The framing is deliberate: Uttarakhand is not building a campus; it is building an ecosystem.

Beyond medals — linking sport to jobs and health

Dhami was explicit that the government's sports policy carries a wider social mandate. Winning medals is not the only goal. The state wants to take sports culture to every citizen, inspire young people toward healthy lifestyles, and connect sport with education, skill development, and employment. The Sports Vision and Legacy Plan, he said, are the vehicles for building a long-term sporting ecosystem that puts Uttarakhand firmly on the national and international sports map in the years ahead.

The state is already working to expand sports facilities down to the district and block level, and to provide talented athletes with training, equipment, nutrition support, and competition exposure. The Khel University at Gola Par is the apex of that pyramid.

Regular reviews, transparency, and strict technical compliance

To keep the project on track, the CM directed officials to conduct regular reviews of the university project, ensure transparency in construction, enforce strict compliance with technical standards, and maintain effective coordination for time-bound progress. The message: accountability is built into the process, not bolted on later.

Uttarakhand's bet is that a purpose-built sports university — combining high-performance training with research and science — can do for the state's athletes what no amount of ad hoc support ever could. The clock is now running.
