How is CM Fadnavis Strengthening Rural Economy by Focusing on Livestock?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Beed (Maharashtra), Feb 14 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday that the government is prioritizing livestock to bolster the rural economy.
He expressed optimism that through the integration of technology, this sector will establish Maharashtra as a global powerhouse in milk production.
CM Fadnavis made these remarks following his visit to the three-day Maha Pashudhan Expo 2026, organized by the Animal Husbandry Department in Parli, Beed district.
The Chief Minister referred to the expo as a crucial step towards addressing climate risks in dryland farming.
“When crop yields decline, livestock serves as the foundation of farmers’ income. Acknowledging both its cultural significance and economic importance, we have elevated the cow to the status of ‘Rajyamata’ (State Mother),” he stated.
Emphasizing the productivity gap, Fadnavis pointed out that while cows in Punjab produce 10–15 liters of milk daily, the average in Maharashtra is approximately 2.5 liters. To close this gap, the government plans to utilize Artificial Intelligence for monitoring livestock, managing health, and enhancing productivity. Furthermore, advanced reproductive technologies such as embryo transfer and sex-sorted semen will be promoted to increase the production of high-quality calves and boost milk output. An agreement has also been established with Mother Dairy for initiatives in Vidarbha and Marathwada.
Addressing trade concerns, the Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has defended Indian agriculture in international trade discussions.
“The India–US agreement does not mention soybean or cotton imports. Farmers should disregard rumors suggesting that foreign imports will lower prices. Instead, Indian farmers now have access to a vast market in America,” he clarified.
Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde revealed that the upcoming Chief Minister Rural Livestock Entrepreneur Scheme aims to inspire rural youth to become entrepreneurs rather than job seekers.
“To empower women as ‘Lakhpati Didis’, the government will offer loans at zero percent interest,” she added. She also emphasized that Maharashtra is the first state in India to grant agricultural status to animal husbandry and expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for this decision.
Meanwhile, a ceremonial exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Vidarbha–Marathwada Dairy Production Project and the Livestock Development Board, Nagpur, took place.
