Chennai, Oct 5 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, conducted an inspection on Sunday of crucial flood mitigation and infrastructure initiatives in the Alwarpet region of Chennai. He urged officials to accelerate these projects to ensure the city is equipped for the impending northeast monsoon.
As per a government announcement, Stalin assessed the ongoing construction of a new storm water drainage system on TTK Road, which is being handled by the Greater Chennai Corporation, while Chennai Metro Water is simultaneously installing underground pipelines.
The Chief Minister scrutinized the advancement of this collaborative effort and instructed that the projects be finalized promptly to prevent waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
Next, he visited Venus Colony, where the storm water drainage project is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 8.21 crore covering a distance of 2.16 km.
The statement emphasized that these drainage systems are engineered to avert persistent flooding in low-lying residential areas.
“During monsoon, water accumulation occurs on Venus Colony First and Second Streets, Sriman Srinivasan Street, Varadharajapuram Main Road, Kasturi Estate First Street, Seshadri Street, and Murrays Gate Road. To mitigate this, storm water drainage works are currently underway on Jayammal Road, Ilango Road Cross Street, Ilango Road, Poes Road, Venkatarathinam Road, Rajakrishna Road, Nallam Poes Road, Varadharajapuram Main Road, Sriman Srinivasan Road, and TTK Road,” the statement mentioned.
Officials revealed that new systems have also been implemented to direct rainwater that may pool due to construction activities, utilizing alternative drainage routes through Eldams Road, C.P. Ramasamy Road, Luz Church Road, and C.I.T. Colony Road.
These initiatives aim to ensure that residents experience minimal disruption during the final stages of construction.
Stalin instructed civic and Metro water officials to hasten the construction and implement necessary safety precautions ahead of the northeast monsoon.
He emphasized that timely project completion and effective inter-department coordination are vital for protecting flood-prone communities.
State Health Minister Ma Subramanian, Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni MLA Ezhilan, senior officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation, and the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, along with local engineers, were present during the assessment.
This review signals the state government's renewed commitment to enhancing the city's flood resilience, particularly just before the anticipated heavy seasonal rains.
