Colombo, Oct 6 (NationPress) In a stunning display of skill, senior all-rounder Deepti Sharma was honored with the best fielder award following India’s impressive 88-run triumph over Pakistan in the 2025 Women’s World Cup at the R Premadasa Stadium this past Sunday.
Deepti was presented the medal by wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, who had received the same accolade in the tournament's opening match. Notably, she executed a brilliant direct hit to run out Muneeba Ali, who had stepped out of her crease and, after initially grounding her bat, was sent back when the throw hit the stumps just as her bat was lifted.
In addition to taking 20 wickets, the all-rounder contributed three runs off 45 balls, aiding India in posting 247 runs and securing their 12th ODI victory against their fierce rivals, bowling Pakistan out for 159. "God is great," Deepti expressed in a video shared by bcci.tv on Monday.
Despite a somewhat lackluster fielding display from India, fielding coach Munish Bali commended Deepti, along with captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, for their commendable performances in the field.
"Shabaash (excellent) girls, well done. Back-to-back wins - took six catches and two run outs. Smriti, excellent with two very good catches under pressure. Harmanpreet, one good catch and one direct hit - well done. Deepti, outstanding slip catch and a good low catch. One run out with excellent game awareness, fantastic Deepti," he noted.
India's decisive 88-run victory over Pakistan has elevated them to the top of the standings in the eight-nation tournament, while Pakistan languishes in sixth place, yet to secure a point.
Next up, India will challenge South Africa at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on October 9, followed by a critical match against the defending champions, Australia, at the same venue on October 12.
