New Delhi, Oct 6 (NationPress) Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha C P Radhakrishnan visited the Secretariat of the Upper House on Monday, where he engaged in a comprehensive presentation regarding the various divisions and initiatives undertaken by the office, as stated by an official.
Throughout the visit, he had discussions with the Secretariat officials and evaluated its operations, emphasizing its crucial role in offering legislative, administrative, and procedural aid to the House and its Members, according to the statement.
Sources indicate that the Vice President is scheduled to meet with floor leaders from multiple parties, including those from the Opposition, on Tuesday. This will be his first formal engagement as Chairman of the Upper House with the elected representatives.
This meeting serves as a precursor to the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, expected to commence next month. The formal discussions with floor leaders may also address the effective operation of the House during the forthcoming session.
C P Radhakrishnan, nominated by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was elected as the 15th Vice President of India on September 9 and took office on September 12.
He secured 452 votes against the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) candidate, former Justice Sudarshan Reddy, who received 300 votes.
The winner exceeded the required quota of 377 votes to determine victory, reflecting the NDA’s parliamentary strength and coalition unity.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) reported that out of 767 votes cast, 752 were valid, while 15 were deemed invalid.
As per Rajya Sabha Secretary-General P C Mody, the returning officer, polling took place in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House, from 10 am to 5 pm, with vote counting starting at 6 pm after polling concluded.
Radhakrishnan’s tenure is set to last five years, extending until 2030, unless an early vacancy occurs.
