The Chief Minister, joined by ministers, Members of Parliament, and MLAs, will lay floral tributes at the leader's memorial in Pasumpon, located in Kamudi taluk, Ramanathapuram district, today. Concurrently, in Chennai, ministers, MPs, MLAs, and local representatives will honor Thevar by garlanding his statue at Nandanam Junction on Anna Salai.
Born on October 30, 1908, in Pasumpon village to Ukkirapandi Thevar and Indrani Ammal, Muthuramalinga Thevar became a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu’s socio-political and spiritual landscape.
From an early age, he stood against colonial rule and advocated for principles such as spirituality, nationalism, anti-imperialism, anti-communism, and the dismantling of caste discrimination.
His life exemplified a potent mix of devotion, discipline, and steadfast patriotism. Thevar passed away on October 30, 1963, yet he remains a revered symbol of courage, faith, and unity among the Tamil populace.
During the administration of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in 2007, the Tamil Nadu government celebrated Thevar's centenary with great fanfare.
Thevar's ancestral home in Pasumpon was restored, and various public amenities were established to commemorate his legacy, including a centenary gateway, a photo exhibition hall, an eternal flame, a new library, a 'Mulai Paari' hall, and a 'Mudikkanakai' hall.
Additionally, three government colleges in Nallur (Tirunelveli district), Kamuthi (Ramanathapuram district), and Usilampatti (Madurai district) were named in his honor.
The tallest statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was also erected in Madurai.
Continuing this tradition of honor, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, inaugurated the Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Memorial Auditorium (Thevar Arangam) at the memorial site on October 28, 2024.
The annual Guru Puja and birth anniversary celebrations serve as a poignant reminder of Thevar's lasting influence on Tamil Nadu's political and cultural heritage, a legacy rooted in justice, equality, and spiritual nationalism.
