Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Sunday, 19 July extended his congratulations to artists and technicians from the Tamil film industry after the state secured 10 honours at the 72nd National Film Awards, calling it a proud moment for Tamil Nadu and a testament to the industry's creative excellence.

Key Wins for Tamil Cinema

The awards, announced in New Delhi on Saturday night, recognised films released in 2024. Tamil cinema emerged among the strongest performers, earning recognition across major categories including best feature film, direction, acting, editing, background music, stunt choreography, sound, and audiography.

Actor-director Dhanush claimed two distinctions: his directorial debut Raayan was adjudged the Best Tamil Feature Film, while he also received a Special Mention for Best Actor for his performance in Captain Miller.

Amaran and Maharaja Lead the Haul

Amaran proved to be one of the biggest Tamil winners of the evening. Director Rajkumar Periasamy took home the National Award for Best Director, editor R. Kalaivanan won Best Editing, and composer G. V. Prakash Kumar claimed Best Background Music — a sweep that underscored the film's technical and artistic ambition.

Maharaja also delivered strong results. Stunt choreographer Anal Arasu won the National Award for Best Stunt Choreography, while actor Sachana Namidass was honoured as Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.

Tamil Nadu's strength in technical filmmaking was further underlined by two additional recognitions. Suren G. received a Special Mention in Audiography for Meiyazhagan, and T. S. Hariharasudhan won the National Award for Best Sound Design for the short film Blue.
