Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday, 24 September announced financial relief of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the nine people killed in the Greater Noida double-decker bus fire, and ₹50,000 each for those injured. The blaze, which broke out on the Yamuna Expressway near the 33 km milestone under the Jewar Police Station jurisdiction, is among the deadliest road-transport fire incidents in Uttar Pradesh in recent memory.

What Happened on the Yamuna Expressway

The double-decker bus, travelling from Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi, towards Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh, suddenly caught fire near the 33 km mark on the Yamuna Expressway. According to officials, preliminary investigations suggest the fire originated from a spark or blast in the bus's air conditioning system, which ignited the engine's lubricating oil, causing flames to spread rapidly through the vehicle.

More than 30 passengers were reportedly on board at the time. In the ensuing panic, many jumped out of windows to save themselves. Nine passengers, including a woman, were trapped inside and died, apparently due to burns or suffocation, according to rescue personnel. More than 20 passengers were safely evacuated.

Rescue and Emergency Response

Upon receiving the distress call, senior police officials along with local forces, a rescue tender, and a fire tender stationed at the Jewar Toll Plaza rushed to the scene. Four additional fire tenders and a fire service unit also responded immediately, eventually extinguishing the blaze completely.

'Despite the heavy smoke, the police team and fire service unit made strenuous efforts to enter the bus; it was discovered that nine individuals had died inside, apparently due to burns or suffocation,' rescue personnel said. The Jewar Police are continuing efforts to formally identify the deceased.

Arrests and Legal Action

Both the driver and conductor of the bus were taken into custody following the incident. 'A case has been registered under relevant sections regarding the incident, and both the driver and the conductor have been taken into custody. Further necessary legal proceedings are underway,' officials said. Authorities have not yet named the bus operator.

CM Yogi's Response and Relief Announcement

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured all possible assistance to the next of kin. He directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and wished for their speedy recovery. The announced relief — ₹2 lakh per deceased and ₹50,000 per injured passenger — will be disbursed to eligible families, according to the government.

Safety Questions Resurface

The incident has reignited concerns over passenger safety standards on long-distance bus routes in India. According to a preliminary report, the bus was carrying a large quantity of luggage, including baggage loaded on its roof — a detail that has drawn scrutiny from safety observers. Notably, this is not an isolated episode; fires involving long-distance buses have occurred previously, repeatedly raising questions about the adequacy of emergency exits, fire suppression systems, and safety protocols mandated for such vehicles. Critics argue that enforcement of bus safety regulations remains inconsistent, particularly for private operators on inter-city routes. As investigations continue, the focus will shift to whether the bus met statutory safety requirements and whether the operator faces further legal consequences.
