On National Handloom Day, 7 August 2026, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is set to salute the state's weaving communities in Lucknow — and then take the celebration straight to the districts, unlocking over ₹706 crore in development spending for Ambedkar Nagar in a single afternoon.

Sant Kabir Award and the two schemes driving UP's loom economy

At the Lucknow ceremony, CM Adityanath will present the Sant Kabir State Level Handloom Award to weavers judged outstanding across Uttar Pradesh. The award, named after the 15th-century poet-weaver saint, is among the state's highest recognitions for artisans in the handloom sector.

Beneficiaries of two state schemes will also receive cheques at the event. The Mukhyamantri Handloom and Powerloom Industry Development Scheme channels financial support to both traditional handloom workers and the powerloom sector. The second, the Jhalakari Bai Kori Handloom and Powerloom Development Scheme, is named after Jhalakari Bai — a historical figure from the Kori weaver community — and specifically targets growth in that segment of the textile workforce.

₹706 crore and 194 projects land in Ambedkar Nagar

After the Lucknow ceremony, CM Adityanath will travel to Ambedkar Nagar, a district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for 194 development projects worth more than ₹706 crore. Beneficiaries of various public welfare programmes will also receive sanction letters, certificates, and cheques directly from the Chief Minister.

The scale of the Ambedkar Nagar package — nearly two hundred projects in a single event — reflects a pattern the Yogi administration has deployed consistently: pairing a thematic observance with a concentrated infrastructure push in a specific district, maximising political and administrative visibility in one visit.

National Handloom Day itself was instituted by the Government of India in 2015 and is observed every 7 August — a date chosen to mark the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905. Uttar Pradesh, home to iconic textile traditions from Varanasi to Lucknow's chikankari clusters, has consistently used the occasion to combine artisan recognition with scheme disbursements.
