Concerns Raised by Manipur's Chief Minister Regarding Historical Documentation

Imphal, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, expressed his worries on Thursday regarding the insufficient records and documentation pertaining to the state’s history. He highlighted that such records are crucial for maintaining the rich culture and traditions of the state and for instilling historical knowledge in the youth.
During a film screening of ‘Chahi Taret Khuntakpa’ (Seven Years' Devastation) held at Kangla hall, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of fostering a sense of nationalism among young people, reminding them of the struggles their ancestors faced to reclaim the freedom and sovereignty that they enjoy today.
This film screening was organized by Manipur State Archaeology under the Department of Art and Culture. Singh recalled that the initiative to create this film was made in 2022, acknowledging the necessity of producing films that focus on significant historical occurrences in Manipur to educate the public about its valuable history.
He mentioned that the short film ‘Chahi Taret Khuntakpa’ is set to be broadcast on the History Channel, as its runtime of 22 minutes qualifies it for airing.
A full-length version of ‘Chahi Taret Khuntakpa’ is also in the pipeline, which will be shown in various cinema halls across the state. The Chief Minister encouraged the film's director, Romi Meitei, to also create a short film about the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, assuring that the state government would allocate the necessary budget for this project.
Singh spoke highly of Maharaj Kulachandra's bravery and dedication to his homeland, particularly his refusal to apologize to the then Queen of England in exchange for his release from Cellular Jail.
He praised Director Romi Meitei, subject matter experts, and the entire production team for their dedicated efforts in creating the film. He emphasized the need for collective support to build a stronger and more developed Manipur, stressing that the state is among the few princely states that engaged in battles against the British.
The Chief Minister announced plans for a general knowledge book titled ‘Know Your Manipur’, which will contain comprehensive information about Manipur and is expected to be released on Statehood Day, January 21.
“Understanding our roots and the legacy of our ancestors is our fundamental duty. Only then can we safeguard and uphold our culture, traditions, and land,” he stated.
Additionally, he declared that a historical feature film will be produced shortly and made available for public viewing in cinema theaters. Furthermore, a new museum equipped with modern technology is set to be established at the Samadhi of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, with an estimated project cost of around Rs 40 crore.
He expressed gratitude to Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi for initiating such projects. Director Romi Meitei also commended the Chief Minister for his vision in bringing this film project to life.
