Manipur's Chief Minister Expresses Worry Over Insufficient Historical Documentation

Imphal, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, raised significant concerns on Thursday about the insufficient records and documentation pertaining to the state's history. He emphasized that addressing this issue could greatly aid in preserving the state's rich culture and traditions while also enriching the youth's understanding of their historical background.

During a film screening event for ‘Chahi Taret Khuntakpa’ (Seven Years' Devastation) held at Kangla Hall, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of instilling a sense of nationalism among the youth, urging them to remember the sacrifices made by their ancestors to reclaim the freedom and sovereignty that they enjoy today.

This screening was organized by Manipur State Archaeology, under the Department of Art and Culture. Singh recalled that the decision to create this film was made in 2022, in light of the necessity to produce films that document significant historical events in Manipur and to enhance public awareness of the state's invaluable history.

He mentioned that the short film ‘Chahi Taret Khuntakpa’ is set to be broadcast on the History Channel as it has been produced as a 22-minute short film, making it suitable for television airing.

Furthermore, a full-length version of ‘Chahi Taret Khuntakpa’ is also in the works, which will be screened in various cinema halls throughout the state. The Chief Minister encouraged the film's director, Romi Meitei, to create a short film focusing on the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, assuring that the state government would provide the necessary funding for this project.

The Chief Minister praised the bravery and patriotism exhibited by Maharaj Kulachandra, who famously refused to apologize to the Queen of England in exchange for his release from Cellular Jail.

He commended Director Romi Meitei, subject matter experts, and the entire team for their dedicated efforts in producing the film. Singh underscored the importance of mutual support in advancing towards a stronger and more developed Manipur, noting that the state had been one of the few princely states that actively resisted British colonial forces.

Additionally, Singh announced the upcoming release of a general knowledge book titled ‘Know Your Manipur’, which will provide comprehensive insights into the state, to be launched on Statehood Day, January 21.

“It is our duty to understand our roots and the legacy of our ancestors, for it is only then that we can safeguard our culture, traditions, and homeland,” he remarked.

Moreover, he revealed plans for the production of a historical feature film that will be screened in cinemas for public viewing. The Chief Minister also noted that a new museum equipped with modern technology will be established at the Samadhi of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, with an estimated budget of around Rs 40 crore.

He expressed gratitude towards Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi for spearheading such initiatives. Director Romi Meitei acknowledged the Chief Minister's vision in initiating this film project.
