Congress Accuses Vijayan of 1.8 Lakh Backdoor Appointments

Synopsis

In a shocking statement, Ramesh Chennithala, a senior Congress leader, claims that during Pinarayi Vijayan's governance, 1.8 lakh backdoor appointments were made, bypassing official procedures and favoring associates of CPI-M leaders, amid rising unemployment in Kerala.

Key Takeaways

  • 1.8 lakh backdoor appointments alleged by Congress.
  • Appointments bypassed state-run Employment Exchange.
  • Beneficiaries primarily related to CPI-M leaders.
  • Data indicates only one-third of vacancies filled through proper channels.
  • Over 2.6 million registered unemployed individuals.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 25 (NationPress) Renowned Congress member and former Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, made a shocking claim on Saturday, asserting that 1.8 lakh backdoor appointments were executed during the over eight-year tenure of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Front administration.

Chennithala noted that these appointments circumvented the state-operated Employment Exchange, breaching established norms and protocols.

The Congress figure indicated that the recipients of these appointments were mainly relatives and close affiliates of leaders from the ruling CPI-M and its associated entities. This information reportedly emerged after a review carried out by the National Employment Service.

Chennithala remarked, “Annually, around 33,000 vacancies arise in government and semi-government sectors, which should be filled through the Employment Exchanges (EE) of the Kerala Government. Nonetheless, data shows that only one-third of these vacancies are filled according to the seniority list of the EE. The rest are assigned by the CPI-M and its supporting organizations.”

The matter came to the forefront after Congress raised specific inquiries in the state Assembly regarding temporary appointments in various government and semi-government bodies. Chennithala accused the government of providing misleading responses to evade scrutiny of their misconduct.

He elaborated, “Officials could have delivered exact answers at the click of a button using the state-backed software SPARK, which oversees the salaries of all permanent and temporary staff. However, to conceal their misdeeds, they attempted to provide ambiguous replies.”

Chennithala further cautioned that the government’s inability to furnish accurate data could provoke the ire of the state’s unemployed youth. “Over 2.6 million people are registered with the Employment Exchange, awaiting job opportunities. The government’s reluctance to respond to inquiries in the assembly is a clear breach of the law and a disrespect to the legislature,” he added.
