Kolkata, Nov 30 (NationPress) During the excavation for a new residence in the Ashoknagar region of North 24 Parganas district, human skeletons were unearthed from beneath the ground on Sunday. Workers stumbled upon a skeleton while digging the foundation, which sparked curiosity and concern among the local community, leading them to gather at the scene and notify the authorities.
This incident occurred near Kalyangarh Bazar, within the jurisdiction of the Ashoknagar police station. Initially, two skulls were discovered, and as the digging progressed, additional skeletons came to light. The area was promptly sealed off for further investigation.
Police officials, including Chintamani Naskar, the officer-in-charge of Ashoknagar police station, arrived at the location. A preliminary assessment indicated that the skeletons appeared to be ancient; however, a thorough investigation and forensic analysis will be needed to ascertain their precise age. The remains have been sent for an autopsy.
Local resident Ashish Mukherjee informed reporters that the land where the skeletons were found belongs to his family. He stated, "I was unaware of this situation. Previously, our uncle Bijan Mukherjee's home stood here. Today, the engineers showed us the skull and bones, suggesting that the skeleton is quite old." Ashish’s family claims to have lived in this part of Ashoknagar since before India gained independence.
Ashish's wife, Moushumi, added, "This house had been unoccupied since my uncle-in-law and his wife passed away in 2013. Occasionally, my uncle-in-law’s daughters visited. Now that the land has been divided, new houses are being constructed, which is where the skull and bones were discovered."
Trinamool's Ashoknagar MLA Narayan Goswami alleged, "The skeleton was located beneath the bedroom floor of Bijan Mukherjee's house, a former CPI-M member in Kalyangarh, ward number 7 of Ashoknagar. They were once a formidable presence in Ashoknagar and Habra. In the 1980s, they were highly influential in this area."
The Trinamool leader further claimed that in 2002, a decomposed body was found in a water tank in the vicinity, expressing concern about the potential discovery of more remains from Bijan's property. He speculated that these could be bodies of Congress workers from that era, suggesting that the troubled history of CPI-M is being uncovered.
No official comments have been received from the CPI-M regarding these allegations made by the Trinamool Congress.
