Mumbai, June 6 (NationPress) Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal has called for the state government to publish a white paper addressing the alleged corruption surrounding the construction of the 701-km Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as Samruddhi Mahamarg.
"The Devendra Fadnavis administration is celebrating the inauguration of the final phase of the Samruddhi Expressway, yet this initiative has turned into a hotspot for corruption. Initial project costs estimated at Rs 55,000 crore have ballooned to Rs 70,000 crore. This Rs 15,000 crore increase highlights significant corruption. If the government possesses any ethical values, it must disclose a white paper on the Samruddhi Expressway project," Sapkal asserted on Thursday.
In response to the inauguration of the final phase, the Maharashtra Congress President pointed out that Rs 3,000 crore in corruption was revealed in the Ghodbunder-Bhayander tunnel and elevated road project, which the government had to cancel only under the Supreme Court's orders.
"Similar to the Ghodbunder-Bhayander project, extensive corruption has also tainted the Samruddhi Expressway, benefitting close associates of Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde. The scandal involving '50 khoke, ekdum okay' (50 boxes, all okay) was financed through the corrupt funds from this project. Essentially, the Samruddhi Expressway is a highway of corruption," he claimed.
Sapkal insisted that the state government should provide a comprehensive account via a white paper, detailing expenditures, costs per bridge, construction expenses per kilometer, compensation for land acquisition to farmers, contractor payments, tree plantation costs, and toll revenue.
He also remarked that many sections of the expressway have already begun to crack due to subpar construction quality.
"Since the expressway became operational, numerous accidents have taken place, resulting in multiple fatalities and hundreds of injuries. The Samruddhi Expressway has only enriched a select few within the ruling party. A thorough investigation into the corruption linked to this project is essential," he emphasized.
