New Delhi, Aug 15 (NationPress) Congress MP and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for lauding the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh — the ideological backbone of the ruling BJP — during his Independence Day address.
Immediately after PM Modi acknowledged the social contributions of the RSS, described as the “world’s largest NGO”, Ramesh remarked, “The Prime Minister's speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort today was stale, hypocritical, lacklustre, and alarming.”
He characterized the PM’s 103-minute speech as a “dull mix of self-praise” and stated on X, “The most alarming aspect of the Prime Minister’s speech today was mentioning the RSS from the ramparts of the Red Fort — a blatant violation of the spirit of a constitutional, secular republic.”
Ramesh emphasized that politicizing a national event like Independence Day for personal and organizational benefits undermines our democratic values, as noted by the General Secretary in charge of Communications for the Congress party.
This I-Day speech wasn’t the first time PM Modi extolled the RSS. Earlier this year, in a podcast with AI researcher Lex Fridman, he credited the RSS with providing him a sense of purpose and instilling a service-oriented philosophy.
“Through the RSS, I found a life of purpose. Then I was fortunate to spend some time among the saints, which gave me a strong spiritual foundation. I found discipline and a life of purpose,” he expressed.
The PM also highlighted the various social causes the RSS has supported over the past century, benefiting tribals, women, laborers, and youth.
Previously, Ramesh contended that PM Modi’s I-Day address failed to address the country’s pressing economic issues, including economic distress, unemployment, and rising inequality.
He claimed that PM Modi’s assurances to protect farmers now appear insincere, especially after the attempt to enforce three controversial agricultural laws.
“Even today, there is no concrete announcement regarding a legal guarantee for MSP, fixing MSP with a 50% profit over costs, or loan waivers,” he said, also criticizing the lack of a credible roadmap for job creation.
The Congress MP demanded transparency in the electoral process, stating, “In Bihar, millions of voters are being deprived through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.”
