New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) The Congress party has voiced its disapproval regarding the suspension of the life sentence handed to former BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was found guilty in the Unnao rape case. The party argues that such occurrences highlight the deteriorating state of justice in BJP-ruled states.
In an interview with IANS, Congress MP Naseer Hussain expressed his dismay over this decision, stating, "This is what happens in a BJP-ruled state."
Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that every citizen deserves justice for the survivor of the Unnao incident. He remarked, "If it seems that the judicial process is veering towards injustice, it delivers a profoundly negative message, not just nationally but globally as well," underlining the importance of maintaining public trust in the justice system.
Alka Lamba, the national President of Mahila Congress, also criticized the investigative bodies, asserting that public confidence in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is waning. She mentioned that demands for a fair investigation in the Ankita Bhandari case have gone unmet.
"Analyzing the CBI’s role in the Unnao case raises doubts about the agency's reliability," she added.
Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput reiterated the party's commitment to advocating for justice for the victim. "Regardless of whether it concerns Kuldeep Sengar or any other perpetrator, the Congress will exhaust all avenues to ensure they are brought to justice. Rahul Gandhi has affirmed that the party supports the victim’s family, pledging both legal aid and emotional support until justice is served. The Congress will not remain silent until justice is achieved for the victim," he declared.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached the Supreme Court to contest the order from the Delhi High Court that suspended Sengar's life sentence and granted him bail in the 2017 Unnao rape case.
The Special Leave Petition (SLP), filed under Article 136 of the Constitution, challenges the December 23 ruling from the Delhi High Court that allowed Sengar's application for sentence suspension during the ongoing appeal process.
On Friday, the family of the Unnao rape survivor, along with women’s rights activists, protested outside the Delhi High Court against the suspension of Sengar's sentence. The protesters expressed their outrage over the court's decision to grant him conditional bail.
