Thiruvananthapuram, March 13 (NationPress) Following protests by RSS and BJP activists against Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi in Neyyattinkara, Kerala, the Congress party has come out in strong support of him.

Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan condemned the incident, labeling it as "highly deplorable" that someone of Gandhi's lineage encountered such treatment.

"Tushar Gandhi was obstructed and verbally assaulted by fascist forces. The Kerala government must intervene, as our state has consistently opposed fascism," Satheesan remarked.

Tushar Gandhi was in Neyyattinkara to inaugurate a statue of the late Gopinathan Nair, a revered Gandhian, during an event hosted by Nair's trust.

The protest arose after Gandhi criticized the Sangh Parivar in his speech, accusing them of propagating a "cancer" that has damaged the essence of the nation. This prompted RSS and BJP supporters to chant slogans and block his vehicle, escalating tensions in the vicinity.

Undeterred, Tushar Gandhi replied with pro-Gandhi chants before departing the venue. "I have done nothing wrong. I am not afraid of these individuals," he stated on Thursday.

State BJP leader S. Suresh dismissed Tushar Gandhi as an "urban Marxist" who "has rented out his voice."

Satheesan countered, asserting that the Congress would persist in inviting Tushar Gandhi to Kerala. "What he expressed is the truth, and we will continue to vocalize the same," he stated.

CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam also denounced the protest, emphasizing, "This is the typical behavior of the Sangh Parivar, and it is intolerable."

While Tushar Gandhi opted against filing a complaint, Congress activists have lodged one at the local police station.

Tushar Gandhi's visit was part of the centenary celebrations commemorating the historic meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt in Varkala, which occurred on March 12, 1925.
