Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 2 (NationPress) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and prominent Congress figure K. Muraleedharan have openly condemned the Modi administration, alleging it is engaged in a deliberate effort to misrepresent history and diminish the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
In a vehement Facebook post, CM Vijayan emphasized that Gandhi dedicated his life to a universal message and was assassinated by a Hindutva extremist because he staunchly upheld the principles of democracy and secularism.
He stated, "Gandhi and his principles obstructed divisive politics, which incited communal factions." The Chief Minister criticized the government for issuing a postal stamp and coin commemorating the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), an organization that faced a ban following Gandhi's assassination.
He termed this action an "affront to the Constitution", arguing that the timing of their release, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, indicates that "even the memory of Gandhi disturbs the Sangh Parivar."
Furthermore, he accused the government of persistently attempting to elevate V.D. Savarkar, who was implicated in Gandhi's assassination, as a national icon.
"This endeavor to replace Gandhi with Savarkar is a perilous misrepresentation that secular society must oppose," CM Vijayan cautioned.
In a show of solidarity, Muraleedharan affirmed that the Modi administration's attempts to downplay Gandhi would be resisted and ultimately overcome.
During the inauguration of a Gandhi Darshan event in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday, Muraleedharan criticized the release of a Rs 100 coin featuring the RSS stamp as "shameful".
"Those who allied with the British during our struggle for independence lack the moral authority to dictate the future of this nation," he asserted.
Muraleedharan accused the RSS of attempting to alter history to fit its ideological narrative and warned that such actions directly threaten India's democratic and secular foundations.
Both leaders utilized Gandhi Jayanti to highlight the ongoing battle against communalism and historical revisionism, asserting that Gandhi's vision of pluralism serves as the genuine remedy for divisive politics.
