Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 6 (NationPress) The tension among Congress leaders in Kerala has resurfaced as senior MP and former party head K. Sudhakaran publicly rebuked Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan for dining with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during an Onam feast, coinciding with the release of disturbing visuals depicting a police custodial assault on a Youth Congress leader. This footage, which emerged following a lengthy legal struggle under RTI, revealed the brutal treatment of Thrissur Youth Congress leader Sujith while in custody at Kunnamkulam two years ago.
The emergence of these shocking images ignited widespread indignation throughout the state, leading to calls for stringent action against the four police officers currently embroiled in a criminal case.
Sudhakaran expressed his disapproval of Satheesan sharing a platform and meal with the Chief Minister amidst the Congress cadre's distress over the graphic footage, stating, “... I would not have attended. Our party treats this assault with utmost seriousness, and we will go to great lengths to secure justice for Sujith.”
While Sudhakaran reached out to Sujith via video call to show his support, Satheesan had visited Sujith at his home recently.
The images capturing both leaders smiling alongside the Chief Minister during the Onam celebration drew criticism from within the Congress ranks, with some members praising Sudhakaran's position as indicative of genuine leadership, indirectly taking aim at Satheesan.
However, Satheesan's supporters contend that the CCTV footage was released while the Onam festivities were already in progress. They assert that Satheesan condemned the incident vehemently and warned of severe repercussions for the culpable officers.
The discord between Sudhakaran and Satheesan is not a new development; their strained relationship often became apparent during Sudhakaran's tenure as KPCC president. This latest incident represents the first public confrontation since Sudhakaran was recently replaced by Sunny Joseph as state party chief.
