Jaipur, Sep 9 (NationPress) Congress MLAs staged a demonstration within the confines of the Rajasthan Assembly on Tuesday, protesting against the delay in Panchayat Raj and local body elections.
Led by Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully, they marched from the MLA quarters to the Assembly, chanting slogans at the entry gate.
Jully accused the government of intentionally delaying the elections out of fear of losing, despite constitutional mandates requiring elections every five years.
The chaos escalated during the Question Hour when Jully was denied the opportunity to ask a supplementary question concerning crime in Khanpur.
Frustrated, Congress MLAs surged into the Well of the House, raising slogans, which compelled the Speaker to adjourn the session—first until 12 noon and then again until 2 p.m.
Speaker Vasudev Devnani issued a stern warning to ministers and MLAs for speaking out of turn, stating, “What kind of drama is this? If you continue, I will adjourn the House.”
Law Minister Jogaram Patel was responding to Jully’s original question when the uproar began. After a reply from the Minister of State for Home Affairs regarding MLA Suresh Gurjar’s inquiry, Jully tried to raise a supplementary question but was halted by the Speaker, who remarked, “What do you have to do with Khanpur? If it’s a state matter, then ask.”
This refusal ignited significant protest, as traditionally the Leader of the Opposition is not prohibited from engaging in discussions in the House.
In the meantime, the Anti-Conversion Bill is on the agenda for passage today, with Congress MLAs preparing to challenge several of its provisions.
A brief discussion on law and order is also anticipated before the bill is addressed. Given the ongoing tensions, another confrontation in the House seems inevitable.
The monsoon session is set to conclude on Wednesday. Over the past two days, Congress has consistently disrupted the proceedings, raising concerns about crop damages due to heavy rains and demanding actions on MSP.
