Revocation of Suspension for Eight Congress MPs After Regret Expressed in Lok Sabha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) The decision to suspend eight Opposition members of the Lok Sabha has been reversed on Tuesday. This action follows a motion introduced by Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, after the Congress leadership expressed their regret concerning the actions of certain MPs.
The suspended lawmakers—Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prashant Yadaorao Padole, S. Venkatesh, and Dean Kuriakose—are all affiliated with the Indian National Congress.
These eight MPs faced suspension on February 3 for the duration of the Budget Session due to accusations of disrupting parliamentary proceedings and throwing documents towards the Chair during a contentious debate.
This resolution came after Congress Chief Whip K. Suresh conveyed regret over what he termed as “inadvertent indiscretion” by some members during the session.
Post this, Minister Rijiju presented a motion in the House aimed at lifting the suspension of the MPs, which garnered backing from Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party.
While addressing the House, Rijiju underscored the importance of establishing clear boundaries to facilitate smooth and effective parliamentary operations.
He remarked, “Rules are a convention of business,” emphasizing that maintaining discipline and adhering to parliamentary procedures is crucial for the legislature's proper functioning.
Rijiju also referenced previous dialogues between the Treasury benches and the Opposition about compliance with parliamentary rules.
He pointed out the significance of maintaining decorum in the House, asserting, “If we form a Lakshman Rekha, then it will be easy for the House to proceed.”
“Yesterday, we mentioned that if the Opposition assists us in adhering to the House and Speaker’s rules, then we (the treasury benches) will reciprocate,” Rijiju stated.
Furthermore, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister urged the Opposition to clarify their dedication to observing parliamentary norms to ensure smoother proceedings moving forward.
Eventually, the House lifted the suspension of the eight MPs through a voice vote, permitting them to rejoin the ongoing Budget Session.
After their suspension was revoked, the MPs visited the Parliament premises to pay their respects to Mahatma Gandhi.
