Why Were 8 Opposition MPs Suspended in LS?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha has taken action by suspending eight opposition MPs on Tuesday for disrupting the proceedings of the House and throwing papers at the Chair for the remainder of the Budget Session.
These opposition members, including Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prashant Yadaorao Padole, S. Venkatesh, and Dean Kuriakose, are all affiliated with the Congress party.
Dilip Saikia, who was presiding over the session, remarked, "The opposition has every right to raise its concerns within Parliament. However, completely disrupting the session and halting its proceedings under the guise of protest is contrary to the traditions of parliamentary conduct."
The motion for suspension was passed amidst loud sloganeering from the opposition benches, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day.
Previously, on the second consecutive day, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had raised the issue regarding the Ladakh standoff, despite repeated interjections from the Chair urging him to present only authenticated sources.
The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated debate as opposition MPs accused the Centre of misleading the House regarding the escalating tensions between India and China.
Gandhi referenced a magazine article tied to an unpublished book by former Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane while discussing the Ladakh situation.
Even after the Chair ruled that quoting news articles or magazines was against parliamentary rules, the Leader of Opposition persisted in raising the matter.
He expressed frustration, stating he was not granted "permission" to speak and asserted that, as the Leader of Opposition, "no one can deny me the right to speak."
Gandhi protested the use of the word permission, emphasizing his role and entitlement to participate in discussions.
Opposition MPs continued to voice their discontent with the Chair's rulings and demanded that the Leader of Opposition be allowed to express his views.
"The President's address delineated the path for India's development. Currently, the global conflict between China and the US is pivotal. It is crucial to our President's address and our budget. I seek to discuss the events between China and India and the Prime Minister's response. Why am I being obstructed?" Gandhi questioned.
While outlining the conflict in Eastern Ladakh, where Indian soldiers lost their lives, he was again interrupted by members from the treasury benches.
The Chair reiterated his request for the Honourable Leader of Opposition to address the President's address, subsequently calling on Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Uttam Patel to speak.
However, Patel declined to speak. Other opposition speakers also refused to take the floor.
In the midst of ongoing chaos, TDP MP G.M. Harish Balayogi attempted to address the Motion of Thanks regarding the President's address, but the uproar continued, prompting the House to adjourn until 3:00 p.m.
When the House reconvened, the tumult persisted, ultimately leading to the day's adjournment.
