New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) After the revocation of their suspension from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Congress MPs expressed their heartfelt appreciation to both the party leadership and Speaker Om Birla for this decision. They emphasized their commitment to continuing to voice their concerns regarding what they characterize as 'discrimination' against the opposition within Parliament.

The suspension of eight Congress MPs was lifted following a proposal put forth by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. This decision came about after the Congress leadership conveyed their 'regret' regarding the actions of some party members.

The suspended MPs included Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prashant Yadaorao Padole, S. Venkatesh, and Dean Kuriakose.

These legislators had been suspended on February 3 for the remainder of the Budget Session due to accusations of disrupting proceedings and throwing papers towards the Chair in a heated moment.

In response to the suspension being lifted, Congress MP Manickam Tagore remarked to reporters that their absence had effectively silenced their participation in parliamentary discussions for several days.

Tagore stated, 'All these 15 working days, our zero hours went off. All the discussions, which we had been allowed, 377, all of those have been removed. No records of us have been disallowed. Our only thing was that the opposition's voice was not allowed to be heard. That is why we protested.'

He further contended that the suspension also stifled the voices of the electorate represented by these MPs.

Additionally, Tagore raised concerns about the treatment of opposition members in the House, questioning, 'In Parliament, only the punishment for the opposition cannot be the right way. There are ruling party members who spoke ill of former Prime Ministers and provided incorrect information about other members. Our Leader of Opposition's mic was switched off. Who will be responsible for that?'

Congress MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also expressed gratitude towards the Speaker but called for fair treatment in parliamentary proceedings. He stated, 'I want to thank the Speaker, but I also want to say: please do not discriminate against us, and do not suppress our voice.'

Warring highlighted the disparity in speaking time, saying, 'It sometimes feels like only Nishikant Dubey, Anurag, and Bittu own Parliament. They get time everywhere, while we are allotted only 15 minutes.'

Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla expressed his appreciation for resolving the issue, stating, 'We thank our leadership for taking our stand to the Speaker. A proper agreement was reached in the House today.'

He further added, 'However, if our leader, Rahul Gandhi, is not allowed to speak, then it makes us upset.'

Congress MP Prashant Padole framed the revocation as a significant victory for democratic principles, asserting, 'This is a victory of the people; today is the victory of democracy.'

Padole emphasized that the intention behind their protests was to raise critical issues like national security.

Congress MP Hibi Eden underscored the vital role of the opposition in a parliamentary democracy, stating, 'When opposition leaders rise to speak on behalf of the people, their voices are often suppressed by the government.'

Eden concluded, 'We are happy that now that we are back in the House, we will raise the public's issues.'

Point of View

The recent revocation of the suspension of Congress MPs highlights ongoing tensions between the opposition and the ruling party within Parliament. While the Congress representatives express gratitude, their commitment to advocating for equal treatment underscores significant issues regarding parliamentary discourse and representation.
