Will Congress Become Irrelevant in Assam by 2031?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 17 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made significant political statements on Tuesday, predicting a substantial change in the opposition landscape of the state ahead of the 2031 Assembly elections. He asserted that the Congress will gradually diminish in importance.
Sarma indicated that by 2031, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will primarily face off against Raijor Dal, suggesting a shift in Assam's political dynamics.
He claimed that the Congress's foundational support, especially among Muslim leaders and workers, is likely to shift towards the regional party.
“By next year, all diligent Muslim leaders from Congress will transition to Raijor Dal,” Sarma stated, emphasizing that his main political challenge in the upcoming election cycle would stem from Raijor Dal rather than Congress.
He elaborated that the Congress's organizational strength is deteriorating at the grassroots level, paving the way for alternative political entities.
Commenting on Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, the Chief Minister noted that future political alignments would hinge on whether Gogoi opts for independence or partnership with Congress.
“If Akhil Gogoi collaborates with Congress, it presents a different situation. However, if he maintains Raijor Dal's independence, the BJP will need to contend with Raijor Dal,” Sarma pointed out.
He further observed that if Gogoi establishes himself as reliable, serious, and politically astute, he could unify Muslim votes and become a formidable player, likening him to AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that numerous leaders are eager to join the BJP, contingent upon the assurance of election tickets.
“We are not interested in individuals who approach us solely for tickets. Nonetheless, many will switch before the elections,” he remarked.
In an indirect critique of Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, Sarma asserted that leaders with political heritage often fail to understand grassroots realities.
He contrasted them with self-made grassroots leaders, whom he respects even if they cannot join the BJP.
Sarma concluded that the departures of senior Congress figures like Bhupen Kumar Borah create a significant ideological and psychological impact within the party, especially among Hindu leaders and student wing members, further propelling the Congress's decline in Assam.
