Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Feb 17 (NationPress) Congress lawmakers, spearheaded by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar, organized a protest on the second day of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly session on Tuesday regarding the fatalities linked to contaminated water in Indore’s Bhagirathpura.
The Congress MLAs conducted a symbolic demonstration in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue within the Assembly grounds, holding bottles filled with dirty water and placards.
They shouted slogans against the state government, demanding justice for the victims and the immediate resignation of Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.
Singhar described the deaths in Bhagirathpura due to contaminated water as “profoundly tragic and concerning.”
He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government of trying to escape accountability in this grave issue. The opposition leader called for Minister Vijayvargiya's resignation on ethical grounds and insisted on stringent action against any officials found culpable.
“The Governor's address claimed the availability of clean water, but the reality is starkly different. We have submitted a proposal voicing public concerns on this matter. The government must clarify if this will be earnestly discussed. The Congress party is eager to address this issue in the House,” Singhar informed IANS during the protest.
Later in the day, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, who also oversees finance, is expected to present the third supplementary budget for the current fiscal year, with an estimated outlay of around Rs 20,000 crore.
The Economic Survey is also slated to be presented in the House.
On Monday, the Congress party sought a white paper outlining the state’s economic status.
In response to the opposition's accusations, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav asserted that the government was prepared to discuss all matters raised in the House and urged opposition members to cooperate for a smooth budget session.
Additionally, the Congress has decided to oppose the attendance of three senior ministers – Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, Urban Affairs Minister Vijayvargiya, and Tribal Welfare Minister Vijay Shah – during the ongoing budget session.
