Mumbai, Jan 27 (NationPress) Following significant objections from both ruling and opposition members, historians, and various organizations, the contentious dance sequence from the film ‘Chhaava’, which depicts the legendary Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be eliminated.

This controversial scene triggered intense backlash, particularly from the descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, who asserted that the portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Queen Yesubai performing the Lezim dance is extremely inappropriate and should be removed.

Another descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji and BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale echoed similar sentiments.

Vicky Kaushal plays the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, while the film also features Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna.

On Monday, film director Laxman Utekar met with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, subsequently announcing the removal of the Lezim dance scene from the movie.

During his discussion with the MNS chief, Utekar stated, "We sought his guidance as he is knowledgeable about history. He has extensively read about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. I learned from him the necessary changes required for the film. His suggestions were valuable and insightful."

"We will be removing the scenes featuring Lezim dancing. Raj Thackeray provided the same recommendation. Our intention was never to offend anyone. However, if it inadvertently causes discomfort, we shall remove it. Since it is not a significant part of the movie, we will delete it," Utekar remarked.

Uday Samant, Minister of Marathi language, also confirmed that the directors and producers of ‘Chhaava’ have agreed to eliminate the Lezim dance scene from the film.

“If the producers and directors have opted to remove the scene, there should be no objections to the film's release,” he stated.

Earlier, the minister had mentioned that the film should be reviewed by "historians and scholars" and if concerns are raised, it would not be permitted for release.

In his post on X, Samant praised the effort to depict Sambhaji Maharaj's narrative on-screen but emphasized the need for historical accuracy and respect towards the Maratha king.

The minister urged the producers and directors of 'Chhaava' to act responsibly, warning that the film's release could be "blocked" if any offensive elements remain.

“It is wonderful that a Hindi film about the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, a defender of faith and freedom, is being produced. Such initiatives are essential for educating the world about Chhatrapati. However, many have voiced concerns about certain objectionable scenes in this film. Our stance is that it should not be released without prior approval from experts. Anything that tarnishes the Maharaj's honor will not be accepted," Samant declared.

He further added, “Our position is that the producers and directors should take immediate measures to eliminate anything objectionable. A decision will be made after screening the film; otherwise, it will not be allowed to release.”

Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande stated that any historical film, whether about Shivaji Maharaj or Sambhaji Maharaj, should be approached with care.

“They are ideals and respected figures. Minister Uday Samant has indicated that advice from historians should be sought before producing any films on this subject. If the narrative offends public sentiment, corrective actions should be taken ahead of time. The Censor Board will fulfill its role in the film's release,” she commented.
