Gwalior, June 17 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure Digvijaya Singh expressed that the suggestion to erect a statue of B.R. Ambedkar at the Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has been made a point of unnecessary contention.
The former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh remarked that he finds it perplexing why there is opposition to Ambedkar's statue at the court when a similar proposal has already been approved by the High Court.
"It is baffling why there is resistance to Ambedkar's statue at the court premises. If a statue can be installed at the Supreme Court, then why not at the Madhya Pradesh High Court? This controversy is completely unwarranted," he stated.
While in Gwalior for an event, Singh told reporters that Ambedkar is an undeniable leader who dedicated his life to the nation.
"There should be no objections regarding the installation of Ambedkar's statue," he asserted.
Singh also mentioned, "This issue is pending before the Supreme Court, and I urge the Chief Justice of India to reach a decision promptly."
The proposal to install Ambedkar's statue, which received the green light from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, has faced opposition from a faction of advocates practicing at the Gwalior bench.
It's important to note that a proposal for Ambedkar's statue was submitted to the High Court in February this year, leading to the formation of a committee that approved it.
However, in March, protests erupted at the High Court by a group of lawyers against the proposed installation, resulting in a clash with another group.
The situation escalated when a faction of lawyers allegedly attempted to obstruct the statue's site by raising the national flag.
Although Registrar Yuval Raghuvanshi permitted the statue installation, persistent objections from certain lawyers led to the proposal being put on hold.
Since then, the Madhya Pradesh Congress has consistently advocated for the installation of Ambedkar's statue within the High Court's premises.
Last month, Congress President Jitu Patwari wrote to Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, seeking his intervention in the matter.
The Congress has been emphasizing this issue in every state program.
Recently, Patwari announced that the Congress would initiate a political movement to gather public support for the installation of B.R. Ambedkar's statue at the court premises.
