New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) The Congress party on Monday vehemently condemned the vandalism of a statue of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar in Amritsar, emphasizing that such actions are a disgrace to the values upheld by the nation and that the public will respond resolutely.

The incident took place on January 26, when Akashdeep Singh, allegedly from the Scheduled Caste community, defaced the statue located on Heritage Street, near the Golden Temple complex.

A video capturing the incident went viral, leading to his swift arrest. As per police reports, Singh employed a hammer and set fire to a stone-carved Constitution book placed near the statue. The underlying motive behind this act is still being investigated.

Responding to the incident, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole remarked to IANS, "In states governed by the BJP and those leaning towards it, acts of disrespect towards Baba Saheb Ambedkar and his philosophy occur on a daily basis. This incident is a direct consequence of such an ideology."

Similarly, Haryana Congress leader Ajay Yadav expressed his dismay, stating to IANS, "This is a deeply regrettable incident. The BJP and RSS have consistently opposed Ambedkar's thoughts and policies."

Former Union Minister Bharatsinh Madhavsinh Solanki denounced the act, underscoring Dr. Ambedkar's significant contributions to the nation.

"Baba Saheb was not merely an ordinary individual; he dedicated his life to the nation's advancement and the establishment of the Constitution. Those who oppose his principles will encounter a strong public backlash," he stated to IANS.

Congress leader and former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal remarked to IANS, "Dr. Ambedkar's impact on India's Constitution and democracy is profound. Such incidents warrant not only condemnation but also a comprehensive investigation and stringent punishment for the offenders."
