New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) BJP leaders, including Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia, and National General Secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam, organized a demonstration outside the home of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in response to the vandalisation of Dr Ambedkar's statue in Amritsar, Punjab.
The leaders denounced the assault on the statue and asserted that they would not accept such acts of disrespect.
In statements made to IANS, Virendra Sachdeva expressed his anger over the incident, remarking, “In Amritsar, Punjab, an assault was perpetrated against the statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar in front of the Kotwali police station. This occurred on Republic Day, a day dedicated to celebrating our Constitution. Yet an attack was launched against the very architect of the Constitution. The AAP government in Punjab remains silent, while the police do nothing. We will not accept this affront to our principles and history.”
Yogendra Chandolia also criticized the vandalism, stating, “Arvind Kejriwal should share the same indignation. He must dissolve his Punjab government, as his silence on this issue will only lead to greater political repercussions.”
Dushyant Kumar Gautam posited that the incident was a calculated effort to alienate Kejriwal’s administration from Dalit communities.
He remarked, “The Kejriwal government is ignoring this because they realize the Dalit community will not back them. We will never permit such degradation of our leaders and communities.”
The event occurred on January 26, when Akashdeep Singh, allegedly from the Scheduled Caste community, defaced Dr Ambedkar’s statue on Heritage Street near the Golden Temple complex.
A viral video of this act led to his prompt arrest by the Punjab Police. The police reported that Singh used a hammer to damage the statue and ignited a stone-carved book representing the Indian Constitution placed near the statue. The exact motive for this act is still being investigated.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed and that an inquiry is underway to explore the full scope of the incident and its underlying motivations.
This vandalism has triggered widespread outrage across the nation, with political figures, including those from the BJP, alongside members of the general public, expressing their strong condemnation of the disrespect shown to Dr Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
