Kolkata, Sep 24 (NationPress) Following the announcement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday regarding a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who tragically lost their lives due to electrocution on Tuesday, the BJP's IT Cell Chief and West Bengal special observer, Amit Malviya, subtly accused the Chief Minister of factoring in religious considerations when determining the compensation amount.
In a post on social media, Malviya highlighted that the Rs 2 lakh compensation for the electrocution victims' families seemed insufficient compared to the Rs 10 lakh compensation promised by the Chief Minister a decade ago for the victims of the Mecca stampede from West Bengal.
“In 2015: Mamata Banerjee provided Rs 10 lakh for Mecca stampede victims from West Bengal. In 2025: The same Mamata Banerjee now offers merely Rs 2 lakh for those who died in the electrocution incident in Kolkata — deaths resulting from her government’s negligence during Durga Puja. This reflects how little she values lives in Bengal,” read Malviya's concise social media statement on Wednesday evening.
Additionally, Malviya criticized the Chief Minister for her festive demeanor while inaugurating a community Durga Puja Pandal in South Kolkata earlier that day, just a day after the electrocution claimed 10 lives in West Bengal, including eight in Kolkata.
He also shared a video showing the Chief Minister participating in a group of “Garba” dancers during the inauguration of the community Durga Puja pandal at Chakraberia in South Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon.
“Less than 24 hours after Kolkata was submerged and 11 lives were lost to electrocution, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee deemed it appropriate to engage in festivities and dance during the Durga Puja inauguration in Bhawanipur's Chakraberia. How insensitive can one be? Mamata Banerjee epitomizes this,” he remarked.
