Cost of Home-made Vegetarian Thali Drops by 3% in December, Non-Vegetarian Thali Becomes More Expensive

New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The expense of creating a vegetarian thali at home has witnessed a 3% drop (month-on-month) in December, while the price of a non-vegetarian thali is believed to have risen at a similar rate, as per a report released on Monday.
The decline in costs can be attributed to the 12% reduction in tomato prices, thanks to fresh supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. In contrast, the non-vegetarian thali's cost escalated due to a significant 11% increase in broiler prices month-on-month, driven by reduced production caused by a cold wave in the northern regions, according to the CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics report.
The report further elaborated, "This situation, combined with heightened demand during the festive and wedding seasons, along with elevated feed costs, has worsened the situation."
Additionally, a 2% and 12% month-on-month decline in potato and onion prices, respectively, contributed to the reduced price of the vegetarian thali in December.
However, on a yearly basis, the rise in the cost of the vegetarian thali was influenced by an increase in tomato and potato prices, which together represent 24% of the thali's total cost, as mentioned in the report.
In December, tomato prices surged 24% to Rs 47 per kg from Rs 38 per kg in December of the previous year.
Potato prices spiked 50% on a low base from last year, reaching Rs 36 per kg in December 2024 compared to Rs 24 per kg in December 2023, due to an estimated 6% year-on-year decline in production.
Adding to the cost was a 16% year-on-year increase in vegetable oil prices due to a hike in import duty, coupled with heightened demand during festive and wedding seasons.
“However, an 11% year-on-year reduction in LPG fuel costs (to Rs 803 for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi, down from Rs 903 last year) offered a partial offset,” the report highlighted.
A vegetarian thali typically includes roti, vegetables (onion, tomato, and potato), rice, dal, curd, and salad. In contrast, a non-vegetarian thali contains similar components, replacing dal with chicken (broiler).
