Chennai, May 28 (NationPress) The Communist Party of India (CPI) has warmly welcomed the candidates put forth by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections set for June 19.
In a statement, CPI Tamil Nadu State Secretary R. Mutharasan expressed his appreciation for the nominations made by the DMK, a significant partner in the INDIA Bloc, commending the coalition’s dedication to democratic principles and inclusive representation.
The DMK has nominated prominent figures such as senior advocate and sitting MP P. Wilson, renowned Tamil poet and author Salma (also known as Rokayia Malik), and former Salem MP S.R. Sivalingam as its official candidates.
Furthermore, MNM founder and actor-politician Kamal Haasan is set to contest one seat under the INDIA Bloc's quota, in line with the alliance’s seat-sharing arrangement.
Mutharasan remarked that the candidate selections showcased the INDIA Bloc’s values of federalism, social justice, secularism, and rationalism, while respecting the voices of allied and supportive parties.
“These nominations reflect the coalition’s determination to uphold democratic traditions and embrace diverse voices committed to progress and justice. The inclusion of Kamal Haasan, P. Wilson, Salma, and S.R. Sivalingam in the Rajya Sabha will strengthen the principles of federalism and combat the rising threat of communal and divisive politics,” he stated.
Advocating for a robust and dynamic opposition in the Upper House, the CPI leader expressed optimism that the four nominated leaders would significantly contribute to the nation’s political and constitutional dialogue.
“We trust they will leave a distinct and commendable impact in Parliament and advocate for the interests of the marginalized, the working class, and the secular values of our nation,” Mutharasan added.
The CPI’s open support for the INDIA Bloc candidates underscores the unity within the alliance as it gears up to challenge the BJP-led NDA in forthcoming political contests, both in Parliament and beyond.
The Rajya Sabha elections will address four vacancies from Tamil Nadu, with the INDIA Bloc’s unified support expected to secure victories for all its selected candidates.
