DMK Declares Congress as Ideal Leader for INDIA Bloc

Chennai, Dec 11 (NationPress) The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which is the ruling political party in Tamil Nadu and a significant member of the INDIA bloc, publicly declared its support for the Congress party on Wednesday, labeling it the most qualified leader of the Opposition coalition.

DMK spokesperson and senior figure T.K.S. Elangovan, in a conversation with IANS, underscored that the Congress boasts a nationwide presence, thereby positioning it as the best candidate to head the INDIA bloc.

His statements arose amidst recent debates where some members of the INDIA bloc suggested that Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee could assume the leadership role following her indication of willingness.

Elangovan contended that while the Congress enjoys broad national appeal, the reach of regional parties like the Trinamool Congress is somewhat constrained.

“Even in Tamil Nadu, the Trinamool Congress lacks popularity,” he remarked.

The DMK leader also highlighted the strong relationship his party has with Congress leaders, reflecting a prevailing sentiment within the DMK favoring the Congress to spearhead the coalition.

Moreover, Elangovan expressed optimism regarding the DMK-led alliance’s chances in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, forecasting a significant victory.

Referencing earlier comments from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he stated that the DMK-led alliance is poised to win over 200 of the 234 Assembly seats.

According to Elangovan, the impressive performance of the Stalin-led government will be a critical element in the alliance’s success.

He attributed the DMK’s stronghold in Tamil Nadu to its achievements in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the INDIA bloc claimed all 39 parliamentary seats in the state, in addition to the sole Lok Sabha seat in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

In the meantime, Tamil Nadu Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE), P.K. Sekar Babu, shared this positive outlook, stating that the DMK-led alliance aims for a complete sweep of all 234 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections.

His comments were a response to criticisms from Tamil superstar-turned-politician Vijay, who labeled the DMK’s assertions as overly ambitious and “boastful.”

Sekar Babu, while providing welfare aid to orphanages in Kolathur recently, remarked, “Certain critics who lack grassroots connections are challenging our assertion of winning 200 constituencies. However, our goal for the 2026 elections is not merely 200 seats; we aim to win all 234 constituencies. The DMK will achieve a clean sweep.”
