Chennai, March 6 (NationPress) The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the main Opposition party in Tamil Nadu, is intensifying its efforts to secure victory in the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections by aiming to defeat its primary rival, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

This strategy comes on the heels of a significant defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

During the 2024 General Elections, the AIADMK-led coalition was unable to capture any of Tamil Nadu's 39 parliamentary seats.

At a gathering in his home district of Salem, AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) asserted that the party's main competitor is the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

He stressed the importance of avoiding vote-splitting in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, hinting at a potential shift towards a poll alliance with the BJP.

Palaniswami, a former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, reiterated that the AIADMK's central mission is to overcome the “anti-people” DMK government.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the AIADMK managed to secure only 66 out of 234 seats, despite being in power for a decade.

The DMK, under the leadership of M.K. Stalin, won 133 seats, capturing 37.7 percent of the vote share, while the AIADMK obtained 33.29 percent, despite facing anti-incumbency.

However, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK's vote share fell to 22.6 percent, while the DMK's surged to 47.2 percent.

This drop, along with internal party dynamics, is reportedly prompting the AIADMK leadership to reevaluate its position on alliances with other parties.

On the other hand, the ruling DMK has already set a bold target of winning 200 out of 234 seats in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

The party has assigned full-time coordinators for each constituency to enhance its election strategy.

As political landscapes shift in Tamil Nadu, the possibility of the AIADMK reuniting with other like-minded parties could profoundly influence the 2026 Assembly elections.
