Kochi, May 6 (NationPress) The CPI-M and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are profoundly displeased with former Congress figure K.V. Thomas, who is currently serving as Kerala's representative in New Delhi, due to his comments praising the contributions of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in advancing the now-commissioned Vizhinjam Port.
On May 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the initial phase of the Port.
During the commissioning ceremony, both Vijayan and State Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan spoke in front of PM Modi but notably omitted any reference to Chandy's involvement.
In contrast, Thomas took to Facebook to express that it was only fair to acknowledge Chandy's contributions, emphasizing that the foundation stone for the Vizhinjam Port was laid under Chandy’s leadership in 2015.
Coincidentally, leaders from the Congress-led UDF have criticized the silence of Vijayan and the Left government regarding Chandy's significant role in progressing the Port project.
Following Thomas's remarks, a wave of discontent emerged against him, providing ammunition for the Congress party and its supporters, which led to the rapid spread of his post. Reports suggest that both Vijayan and the CPI-M have expressed strong discontent regarding Thomas's candidness.
The 79-year-old Thomas has a notable political history, having been a close associate of former AICC president Sonia Gandhi and serving as a Union Minister with independent charge in the second UPA government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Over his extensive political career, Thomas has secured five terms in the Lok Sabha and has been elected twice to the Kerala Assembly, serving as a cabinet minister in the A.K. Antony cabinet.
However, after being denied his sitting Ernakulam Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 elections, Thomas grew disenchanted and began distancing himself from the Congress party, aligning more closely with the CPI-M and Vijayan.
At that time, Thomas defied the Party High Command by attending the 23rd CPI-M Party Congress in Kannur in 2022 and faced expulsion after participating in the campaign for the Thrikkakara Assembly by-election for the Left candidate, which was inaugurated by Vijayan.
In 2023, Vijayan appointed Thomas as the Kerala representative in Delhi, granting him cabinet rank and a lucrative salary along with additional benefits.
However, with Thomas's recent statements causing annoyance for both the CPI-M and Vijayan, it remains to be seen whether he will face repercussions or if the Chief Minister will pardon him for his honesty.
