Vizhinjam, May 2 (NationPress) Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated on Friday that it was the Left government that successfully brought the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport to fruition. He extended his thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for dedicating this significant project to the nation and to Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani for excelling in its execution.
“This port is set to become the most vital in the country, attracting global interest. Adani Ports deserves commendation—not just for constructing a port, but for opening India’s maritime gateway for the third millennium,” remarked Vijayan.
He attributed this success to the unwavering determination of the Left government. “Currently, 75 percent of transshipment containers are directed through alternate ports. Moving forward, they will be routed here,” he affirmed.
Vijayan mentioned that, according to the initial agreement, the project was intended for completion by 2045. “However, operations commenced in 2024, with the first phase already completed. All phases are set to finalize by 2028,” he elaborated.
The Chief Minister emphasized the numerous challenges encountered during the project’s execution.
“We faced significant obstacles such as Cyclone Ockhi, devastating floods, and the Covid pandemic. But Kerala persevered, as did Adani Ports,” he noted.
Reflecting on the port's history, Vijayan stated that the concept was first proposed by the Left government in 1996.
“In 2010, during our administration, the tendering process was halted by the UPA government. In 2015, we launched an agreement that was met with criticism. Yet, upon regaining power in 2016, we remained committed to development—and today, we witness the outcome,” he explained.
He also highlighted the government’s initiative to engage local communities. “We allocated Rs 120 crore for the welfare of the local population. A skilling center has been established here, and local women are now operating cranes at the port,” Vijayan mentioned.
In conclusion, he conveyed, “On behalf of the people of Kerala, I express heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Prime Minister for visiting our state to inaugurate this landmark project. I also congratulate the Adani Group for their excellent execution of this mission.”
