The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation (CPI-ML) on Thursday, 18 June categorically rejected allegations of cross-voting in the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections, after the Congress accused its alliance partners of sabotaging the candidacy of Pranav Jha and handing victory to NDA-backed Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani. The outcome has exposed deep fissures within the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand, despite the alliance holding a commanding majority in the state Assembly.

What Happened in the Election

All 81 members of the Jharkhand Assembly participated in the two-seat Rajya Sabha election. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Baijnath Ram sailed through with 31 votes. However, Congress nominee Pranav Jha managed only 20 votes, while Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani polled 30 votes — two of which were declared invalid, leaving him with 28 valid votes, enough to secure the seat.

The INDIA bloc commands 56 MLAs in the Assembly — 34 from the JMM, 16 from the Congress, 4 from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and 2 from the CPI-ML. The NDA, by contrast, holds only 24 seats. Political observers estimate that at least 6 to 7 INDIA bloc legislators voted against the agreed party line.

CPI-ML's Categorical Denial

CPI-ML General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya issued a firm rebuttal, stating that both party MLAs had voted for the Congress candidate as planned. 'As for the speculation over the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha voting, we can say with full responsibility that our two MLAs voted for the Congress candidate as planned. Two of our senior leaders, Polit Bureau member Haldhar Mahato and Central Committee member Geeta Mandal, duly verified the votes cast by CPI-ML legislators,' Bhattacharya said in a statement.

The denial has, however, complicated efforts to trace the source of the alleged cross-voting, since it effectively redirects suspicion toward the RJD or dissident Congress MLAs.

Congress Turns on Its Allies

Jharkhand Congress in-charge K. Raju alleged that legislators from the RJD and the CPI-ML had 'betrayed' the Congress, directly blaming alliance partners for Jha's defeat. With the CPI-ML now publicly clearing its name, the finger points more squarely at the RJD's four MLAs — or at internal Congress dissidence — as the likely source of the defection.

Notably, this is not the first time floor-management failures have embarrassed the INDIA bloc; similar coordination breakdowns have surfaced in other state-level votes, raising questions about the alliance's structural cohesion beyond electoral optics.

Political Fallout and What Comes Next

Nathwani's victory is being read as a significant political setback for the Congress and a demonstration that legislative arithmetic alone does not guarantee outcomes in the absence of tight floor discipline. The result has prompted open recriminations within the alliance, with trust and coordination now firmly under the spotlight.

The Congress is expected to undertake a formal review of the voting pattern, and pressure is mounting on the RJD to account for its legislators' ballots. How the INDIA bloc manages this internal crisis will have direct implications for its cohesion ahead of future electoral contests in Jharkhand and nationally.
