Kochi, Feb 3 (NationPress) The Kerala branch of the ruling CPI-M is facing scrutiny for their support of actor-turned-legislator Mukesh, who has recently been charge-sheeted in a case involving sexual assault and harassment by the special investigation team (SIT) in an alleged rape matter. The opposition Congress is challenging their “different” morality.

As the top leadership of the CPI-M swiftly rallied behind Mukesh, claiming it is premature to determine his fate and that the court should decide, Congress leaders accused them of shifting the goalpost of morality. This stands in stark contrast to the Left party's previous demands for the resignation of then Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy when a woman accused him of misconduct, which led to widespread protests.

Two current Congress legislators, M. Vincent and Eldose Kunnapally, who faced similar allegations in past years, were subjected to immense pressure from the CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front to resign.

The CPI-M's position persists despite the fact that the SIT has presented its charge sheet to the Ernakulam Judicial Magistrate Court, asserting that there is digital evidence against Mukesh. This includes WhatsApp conversations and emails exchanged between the complainant and the actor, along with circumstantial evidence and witness testimonies.

Veteran CPI-M leader and Chairperson of the Kerala State Women’s Commission, P. Sathy Devi, stated that it is up to individuals to determine their stance when issues of morality arise.

“Let the court reach its conclusion regarding this case (Mukesh), and once that is established, the party will take suitable action,” said Sathy Devi, who is also a former MP.

Former minister and Lok Sabha member P.K. Sreemathi emphasized that details will emerge as the investigation progresses and that there is no need for undue concern. State CPI-M Secretary M.V. Govindan has already affirmed that there is no basis for Mukesh to resign, insisting that the case should unfold in court.

Senior Congress figure Jyothikumar Chammakala remarked that the CPI-M is notorious for its inconsistent positions on various matters.

“When they find themselves in a difficult situation, they assert one thing, and when a leader from the opposing party encounters similar issues, they are quick to demand resignation and issue statements on political leaders maintaining a high moral standard,” he noted.

Since the release of the Justice K. Hema Committee report in August 2024, multiple actors, including Mukesh, Siddique, Edavela Babu, Jayasurya, Ranjith, Maniyanpillai Raju, Nivin Pauly, among others, have faced allegations, resulting in FIRs for sexual misconduct. Nonetheless, all have since received bail.

With the Assembly session set to resume shortly, the Congress-led Opposition is prepared to vigorously challenge the Pinarayi Vijayan government regarding their guidelines on morality.
