Why is Satheesan Criticizing the Delay in FIR Against Former MLA and Alleging Graft in Global Ayyappa Meet?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kozhikode, Feb 13 (NationPress) V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, sharply criticized the CPI-M-led administration on Friday, accusing it of inconsistency in addressing a sexual assault allegation against former Left MLA P.T. Kunhumuhammed. He also highlighted significant irregularities surrounding the Global Ayyappa Meet.
Satheesan expressed his embarrassment at living in Kerala after going through the survivor's narrative.
The complaint regarding the sexual assault was presented to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on November 24, but an FIR was only filed on December 8.
He stated, "This illustrates how carelessly cases are treated when the accused is from their own faction," and demanded accountability from the Chief Minister, who manages the Home portfolio.
He contrasted this with how a complaint against a party MLA was swiftly forwarded for an FIR on the same day.
Allegations against individuals affiliated with the Left, he noted, were not taken seriously and faced a delay of two weeks.
Satheesan commended the bravery of the survivor in bringing the situation to light, cautioning against a societal environment that further victimizes women who speak out.
"There should be no double standards in such cases," he emphasized.
On the Global Ayyappa Meet, he labeled it as "another scam in the name of Lord Ayyappa."
Despite being monitored by the Kerala High Court, he alleged that crores were misappropriated through inflated and fraudulent accounts.
Claims of providing food for 4,000 attendees were contradicted by an actual turnout of only about 600.
Payments were reportedly recorded for a bhajan group that did not perform.
He called for a comprehensive investigation into what he described as embezzlement disguised under the Devaswom Department.
Regarding education, Satheesan mentioned that textbook distribution was delayed only once during the UDF regime and accused the current government of propaganda.
While appreciating the timely distribution, he criticized the LDF for not updating the curriculum to match modern needs.
As elections draw near, he noted that the UDF's publicity and manifesto committees are part of standard preparations, emphasizing that the coalition operates through collaboration.
He expressed confidence that political transformation in Kerala would resonate across various regions, including northern Kerala.
