CPI(M) Minister Dismisses Sudhakaran's Independent Bid as Insignificant

Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, March 13 (NationPress) Following the announcement by senior CPI(M) figure and ex-state Minister G. Sudhakaran that he will run as an Independent candidate in the Assembly elections from his home constituency of Ambalappuzha, Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian remarked that this action will have a minimal effect on the party.
In an interview with IANS, Cherian expressed his disappointment regarding the choice made by the four-time MLA and former Minister, especially given the numerous opportunities the party has extended to him throughout the years.
“This was not the right decision. The party has provided him with everything—from grassroots roles to high-ranking positions, including that of a State Minister, where he has been entrusted with significant responsibilities,” Cherian stated.
Interestingly, Cherian is also from Alappuzha district. Sudhakaran, a key CPI(M) leader from the district, declared his intention to contest as an Independent candidate from Ambalappuzha last Thursday, which has sparked strong reactions among local party members.
However, Cherian insisted that the party's organizational strength will prevent this rebellion from resulting in electoral losses. “Just wait and see. No one from our party is likely to support him. Our structure is robust and disciplined, and the organization remains committed to the party's principles,” he asserted.
When asked about the organized protests against Sudhakaran in Alappuzha, including night marches and critical posters, the minister noted that these reactions showcase the frustration among party workers, which is expected to persist.
“Indeed, our party workers are upset with him. The unrest we saw last night was a natural reaction to his outburst and his decision to run as an Independent candidate,” Cherian commented.
The minister also indicated that Sudhakaran's announcement did not catch the leadership completely off guard. “I was aware that Sudhakaran had been contemplating this since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Our senior leaders had engaged with him multiple times to alleviate his concerns. Looking back, it appears that his decision was something he had been considering for over a year,” Cherian added.
He emphasized that this development will not hinder the party's prospects in Alappuzha or in the state at large.
