Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Alappuzha, March 12 (NationPress) G. Sudhakaran, a seasoned two-time State Minister and four-term CPI(M) Legislator, declared on Thursday his intention to run as an Independent candidate in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections from the Ambalapuzha Assembly Constituency.
This announcement came during an extensive press briefing at his home, effectively quelling the recent rumors surrounding his political trajectory and speculations about his connections with opposing political factions.
Sudhakaran commenced his address by clarifying that he had not previously disclosed his electoral plans to anyone.
“In recent days, various narratives have emerged regarding my candidacy. I have not communicated with anyone about running for office, nor have I engaged in discussions with leaders from alternative political parties,” he stated, countering media claims that he had conferred with Congress leaders or was considering joining the UDF.
The experienced politician also addressed reports indicating that prominent members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had sought his collaboration.
He confirmed that M. A. Baby had visited him the day before for a meal; however, he emphasized that their conversation did not touch upon any political matters.
Sudhakaran also mentioned visits from CPI(M) members Sujatha and Hari Sankar, noting that their familial ties rendered their meeting devoid of political significance.
He disclosed that he opted not to renew his party membership during the recent membership verification process conducted three weeks ago.
“Failing to renew one’s membership results in cessation of party affiliation, although one may still remain a supporter,” he elaborated.
Reflecting on his political journey, Sudhakaran shared that he joined the party at the age of 15 and began his active political involvement during his college years in 1967.
He highlighted his extensive service within the party, including conducting ideological classes for 36 years and attending numerous party congresses as a delegate.
While asserting his disinterest in aligning with any political party or coalition, Sudhakaran expressed his commitment to uphold Communist principles and maintain a humble public persona.
He firmly stated: “I am no longer a party member. I will contest from Ambalapuzha as an Independent candidate.”
Sudhakaran voiced his dissatisfaction with the treatment he received, recalling that former Minister Thomas Isaac and party member Elamaram Kareem were both granted Lok Sabha candidacies, while he faced exclusion.
He also criticized State Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian, whom he views as one of the individuals conspiring against him.
