Alappuzha (Kerala), Oct 15 (NationPress) Prominent CPI(M) figure and former Minister G. Sudhakaran has vehemently criticized State Fisheries Minister and party secretariat member Saji Cherian, alleging that Cherian is plotting to have him ousted from the party.
During a press conference in Alappuzha, Sudhakaran stated, “Some of my colleagues even lit firecrackers celebrating my supposed expulsion. A ‘tea gathering’ was held to mark the occasion, in which Saji Cherian participated. It is imperative that action is taken against him. There were even attempts by some of his close affiliates to align him with the BJP. I have never been bested in a conflict. I speak from the grounds of Punnapra-Vayalar,” an impassioned Sudhakaran declared.
The seasoned politician emphasized that he has never criticized the party.
“Saji Cherian should not confront me directly; that would be inappropriate. A complaint was lodged against me after the elections. Could such a complaint have progressed without Saji Cherian’s awareness? Wasn’t he a part of it?” questioned Sudhakaran, recognized for his unblemished public persona and reputation as a straightforward leader.
He further accused Cherian of consistently making statements that contradict the party’s official stance.
“He has made 14 statements opposing the party’s position recently, yet no disciplinary measures have been taken. What authority does he have to give me advice? He lacks both the seniority and the qualifications to do so,” Sudhakaran asserted.
Interestingly, during Sudhakaran’s tenure as the leading figure in Alappuzha district, he was instrumental in promoting Saji Cherian and assisting him in ascending to key leadership roles within the party.
In response to the intensifying internal conflict, AICC general secretary and Alappuzha MP K.C. Venugopal commented that the situation is an internal affair of the CPI(M).
“Sudhakaran and I maintain mutual respect. While we may have ideological disagreements, it has never influenced our personal rapport,” Venugopal remarked.
For a while now, Sudhakaran’s candid statements have created unease within the CPI(M). Reportedly, tensions heightened after Venugopal visited Sudhakaran a few weeks ago, a meeting that unsettled the party hierarchy.
Sudhakaran, formerly a close ally of veteran leader V.S. Achuthanandan, later joined forces with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan when the latter took over as the state party secretary.
With Sudhakaran’s latest comments, all eyes are now on the CPI(M) leadership’s reaction. Notably, Saji Cherian is currently accompanying Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on an extensive tour of the Middle East that begins later today.
